Ember

Ember is the daughter of Cutter and Leetah, heir to the chieftainship of Lostholt. Her father's honorary 'title' is Blood of Ten Chiefs; Ember's is Daughter of the Blood. Intelligent, if short-tempered, even eights of turns after the end of the Palace War, Ember believes fiercely in words that her father spoke within the Palace walls: "If there is any way other than war to deal with our so-called enemies -- we'll find it!" Far too aware that humans outnumber the elves by a vast majority, and that they breed much more quickly than do the elves, Ember cannot let her dream of uniting the elven tribes die, though the attempts she has made thus far have been failures.

For a period of nearly four years, Cutter left the holt, exploring once more with his soulmate Skywise. During this time, it fell to Ember to play the role of chieftess in the holt, and in those years, Ember made probably every mistake that she possibly could have. Wary as all the Wolfriders are of Gliders, Ember's determination to link all the tribes lead her to a rash decision to save the life of a Glider named Sar whose primary form of entertainment was to insult the Lostholt wolfriders until they were in a fury. Circumstances built to a head, and in the company of Melendrian, an Underworlder, Softheart, a Wolfrider healer, and someone else who's name I'm forgetting right now, Ember first nearly caused Sar's death through a challenge, and then insisted that his life be saved, unwilling to have the death of one of her distant kin on her hands.

Sar stayed in the holt, under Ember's care, for several months, and in that time fell in love with her, a love that she vehemntly denied returning. Unhappy at his home in Blue Mountain, he requested permission to stay at Lostholt, permission that Ember was unwilling to give, until he threw a challenge into her teeth: "You," he said, "are just like the rest of them. You see that I am a Glider, and you will look no further, believing me to be an enemy."

If Sar's purpose was to be allowed to stay at the holt, it worked admirably; Ember would not allow that challenge to go unanswered, determined to prove the Glider wrong. He lived in the holt a full turn before he was, in fact, finally forced to leave -- at the insistence of the tribe elders. Cutter finally returned, and Ember, with great relief, turned over the tribe to him once more.

Time passed, and some turns later, the elves were invited to the Festival of Flood and Flower at Sorrow's End, and nearly all of Lostholt went. It was there that Ember met Sar again. Still deeply in love with her, and determined to possess the elfin lass somehow, Sar kidnapped Ember, whisking her away to a hidden cave within the distant volcano visible from Sorrow's End. The staged rescue was dramatic, ending with Ember being forced to make a choice for Sar: whether he would live or die. Unsurprisingly, she chose life, and Sar was wrapstuffed, and brought back to the village for discussion about what to do with him. While the discussion went on, Ember opened the wrapstuff, and in that moment, she and Sar Recognized.

(This, as a completely irrelevant side note, had the fascinating effect of actually grinding the entire MUSH to a halt for ten minutes while wizards and Winnowill waved their hands about and screamed. A piece of advice: don't have a major book character Recognize without sufficient warning to the wizards.)

Twins were born of the Recognition, for both IC and OOC reasons. ICly, the chieftains of Lostholt have never seemed to have a particular magic of their own (evidenced by Ember and Suntop, particularly), while Sar's heritage was likely to produce a magic-bearing child. OOCly, Winnowill was displeased at yet another Outsider/Glider Recognition, and to pour oil on the waters, we wanted to have a child for both the Mountain and the holt. The twins, Lhyree and Minx, both girls, are one of the three sets of twins on TwoMoons, and failing an act of the gods, there won't be any more.

Lhyree was born first, by an hour or two; Ember had no idea she was carrying twins, as Leetah had been at the Sun Village while Ember was pregnant, and Lhyree, unlike her wolfblooded sister, had no soulname to share with her mother at the time of conception. Sar took Lhyree away from the scene of her birth at Ember's muzzy-headed insistence; there had been an attack by a human, and while Ember and both the cubs survived, Ember's memory of the scene did not, and for years she refused to let Leetah heal her of the minor amnesia, afraid that the healing would reveal that her attacker had been Sar. The second child, Minx, was born at Grove Holt, under Treestump's watchful eyes. The old wolf had found Ember, broken and bleeding and clearly in labor, only moments after Sar had risen into the sky with Liri, which is what brought the conclusion that Sar was responsible for the attack to Ember's mind.

For the first several years of Minx' life, Ember was not at all prepared to be a mother, and the girl was raised by the tribe, particularly a tiny elf named Willowgreen. When Willowgreen Recognized an Underworlder and chose to go to Grove Holt, Ember, for the first time, took an interest in her daughter, who was then about five turns of age. Slowly, they grew close, and now hunt and howl together regularly.

The entire family met at Sorrow's End during Festival, and it seems that all old wounds are healed, and things calm in Ember's life once more.

(This is badly outdated...)

Many thanks to ElfQuest artist Steve Blevins for the rendering of Ember on this page, and thanks as well to Ric Ashliegh for colorizing it.
