bit by bit

June 27th, 2008, 3:45 pm

I have conquered my office, which was critically necessary in order to allow me to get back to work tomorrow. The art isn’t up, but the room’s arranged more or less to my liking, all the knicks and the knacks are distributed (Kate, you’ll be pleased to know that all of them arrived utterly unscathed, even the hard-to-wrap delicate ones, and I am very grateful to you for your efforts. You did a much better job wrapping them than I’d have done. :)), and the computer (still named Nook, which is increasingly misleading; I’m going to have to rent out an office suite to improve on this room!), is up and running. I also got the kitchen/dining room under control, although there’s an enormous pile of flattened boxes and four boxes of the landlord’s kitchen stuff in there, so it doesn’t look nearly as much like it’s done.

I went into our bedroom, looked around, and fled again. Not man enough to face that today. Nor am I prepared to deal with the computer room, but we need some kind of support structure for our printers, and probably at least one more bookcase before we can really get a handle on that room anyway. We have a number of boxes in there labeled “living room crap” or “STUFF” which need to just be gone through item by item in an attempt to get rid of as much of it as possible. But it’s coming along, and I should be able to work in my office tomorrow, which is good.

If I was a very, very good person I would take myself out to the grocery store and buy perishable sorts of food. I…doubt I’m that good a person. I may be just barely good enough to do some writing. I don’t know yet.

and done.

The AAs for HANDS OF FLAME are turned in. That book is officially put to bed. Look for it on the shelves in September 2008….

I have a prologue left to write and a spell-check to run, and then I’m done. That’s for tomorrow; tonight I’m going to go eat dinner and watch some House.

movies & metrics

April 19th, 2008, 4:02 pm

Ted and I went to see “Street Kings” today, which was not only a surprisingly good movie, but Keanu Reeves was surprisingly good *in* it. There were only a couple of “whoa” or “dude” kinds of moments, and one of them was very nearly on purpose, I think. I’d say that was hands down the best Reeves movie I’ve ever seen, and hell, I /like/ him. (Generally I think he’s actually a hell of a physical actor, which is why he did so well in the Matrix movies: they didn’t require him to talk a lot, and delivering lines is not his strong point. But damn, “Street Kings” was *good*!)

I informed myself this morning that I would write between 9am and 1pm, and whatever I wrote in that time would simply be enough. I wrote 4200 words. I think my brain is somehow outsmarting me.

*Man* I have ComicCon envy. NYCC is sounding awesome from everybody’s posts. *flings self in a pit, dramatically* :)

thursdays start my week

February 21st, 2008, 11:31 am

I have, for years and years now, kind of considered Thursday to be the start of my week. This is because Shaun and Ted so frequently worked weekend hours, so they often had Tues/Weds off, and I would just work to that schedule, pretty much. Shaun, though, moved away two years ago (wow, snif!), and Ted is now looking at Monday-Friday day jobs. My schedule may finally return to what the usual working world’s is. *boggle*

Stupid hand is improving. My *temper* is fragmenting as the days go by and my typing continues to be inept and I get further and further behind, but my hand is getting better. Kate came by last night and was gratifyingly horrified at its color, which is yellow with dramatic purple highlights where the deeper bruising is still coming up, but it’s much better. I think, though, that I won’t be able to participate in kendo this weekend either, which is annoying. But I’m trying VERY VERY hard not to overdo it and let the fricking thing heal so that maybe by Monday I’ll be able to really go back to work. *radiates frustration*

The wonderful bright red has washed out of my hair and now I hate it. I am trying to keep myself in mind of the fact that what I am frustrated with is my hand and the inability to work, not my hair, and that going and cutting it all off will not actually make me any happier with my hair, my hand, or my work.

People are getting notifications that HOUSE OF CARDS is shipping! That’s good. And I have finally packaged up all the books I was supposed to send people three weeks ago and will put them in the mail as soon as I’m done writing this blog.

help me, livejournal wan kenobi!

January 16th, 2008, 9:45 am

My desktop computer decided, last night, that it would be nice to have power running to it, and for its amber “I’m booting” light to blink on and off very rapidly, but nothing else is happening. No booting. No fan running. No nothing. I’ve killed the power to it entirely; when the power is re-introduced, it just goes back to humming and blinking.

This is, thank God, not my writing computer, and yes, as a matter of fact, I will be backing up Nook oh let’s see AS SOON AS I’M DONE TYPING THIS ENTRY, but I was wondering if Livejournal Knows All could help with any suggestions. It’s a Windows box, it’s running…XP, probably, it’s on the old end of things (four years?) and overall it seems likely that it’s recoverable if I bring it down to a shop or something, but it’d be a lot nicer to actually fix it at home and not have to haul it somewhere.

Help me, Livejournal Wan Kenobi! You’re my only hope!

missy crankypants

January 11th, 2008, 10:23 am

I am a total missy crankypants today. It took forever to go to sleep, as it has for most of the last week, I woke up at what would have been a reasonable time if I hadn’t gone to sleep so late, but didn’t get up, and had extremely cross dreams for the next eighty minutes or so, got up, and was followed around the house by cats who screamed as though they had not been fed in centuries. I decided to allow myself breakfast-time on the internet, hoping it would jolly me a bit, and it did, but when I went to the other computer to write I just couldn’t give a damn.

Know what? Screw it. I’m going back to bed. I’ll start the day over when I get up again.
