Spent Saturday night in emerg with Ben. He got stabbed in the eye by a three year old waving around an artificial palm frond. He’s feeling much better now (wowie, those things heal fast)(thank goodness!) but when we saw it Saturday night (thanks to orange dye and a special light), it was a shallow trough about an eighth of an inch wide and three-quarters of an inch long, on his cornea and sclera.
When anyone at the hospital asked what poked his eye, Ben replied, “It was a fake palm frond,” which brought the inevitable next line, “It was a *what*?” He had the exact same conversation with three different people… it was really funny because they all used the identical inflection on the “*what*?” part. :o) Ben was very patient with them. :o) After the diagnosis, the doctor prescribed antibiotic eye drops (for the next three days, as a preventative) and painkillers (as necessary) , dosed Ben up with a Vicodin(sp?) and sent us on our merry way. We stopped at the all-night pharmacy in the pouring rain and filled the prescriptions, then home again, home again, jigety-jig.
Sunday instead of going to fight practice, I stayed home with Ben, "just in case". He was out light a light till 11:30 and I was getting worried, so I went and checked on him. He woke up blearily and I wedged his eye open to put the drops in it, but he declined another painkiller since it “wasn’t so bad.” His day was spent in the relative dark and quiet of his room, listening to audio books and generally doing a good job of being bored out of his skull. No light, no books, no screen–time. Lots of cat snuggling. I did a bunch of hand-sewing.
Fight practice sounded like it was a good one, though Paul came home with a really sore hand. You know, he keeps *saying* he doesn’t like greatsword…
So after a ten-year absence, my teeth were in *very* good shape. The dentist was really surprised. She said that if I came in for a cleaning and checkup once every 3 years, that would be like the average person coming in every 6 months. That said, I'm going back in about 6 months... better to stay on top of it.
Worked out today - lifted weights. Still stiff but less sore.
Started an Intro to Mortgage Insurance and the Mortgage Industry self-study course at work. I'm just in the introductory chapters so nothing really revolutionary yet to report. :o)
Gotta run, all. Have a good night!
Quick note: Very stiff and some sore. Fought at Spring Fling yesterday in the melees... that is SO MUCH fun!!
All of a sudden it's night. Give it about two minutes and it will be pouring.
MGIC has an employee gym. I was supposed to start a gym program today, with some circuit/weight training. I brought everything I needed, except I didn’t make sure I had my runners in the show bag… I have my black work shoes with me. Humph! Once it cools off a bit tonight, I will go for a walk, and do the gym workout Tuesday-Wednesday-Friday.
This week is relatively not-busy… sewing Tuesday night and fight practice at Leif’s Thursday. Last week Paul and I were the only two people to show up at Leif’s. Just before an event, I guess, so everyone was saving up their energy or something. They should not have bothered – it was so hot and humid on Saturday, by the time I got there they had quit already. It was probably a good thing I didn’t try to fight, since I was having trouble breathing just from walking around.
It's thundering.
Ben is learning to make shoes in the SCA, from Viscount Sir Dafydd. They will be very cool! He doesn’t seem to be interested in pursuing it beyond one pair though, which is too bad. He needs something to do at events, since he decided he doesn’t want to continue fighting. He came up with a list of things he wants to try: shoe making, leather tooling, illumination, brewing (root beer) … he’s already made some chainmail with Master Thomas, but found that to be pretty strenuous.
Sewing-wise, I am puzzling my way through Paul’s gambeson. I’m making Ben a sort-of cotehardie, though I will likely make him another one fairly soon if this one ends up not looking “right enough” to me, as I am expecting it to... For myself, I’m embroidering a dress I made a while back (dark grey linen) with a pattern taken from a carved ivory statue (see figure 7).
It's pouring. Poor, umbrella-less Soly.
Viscount Sir Dafydd found these awesome thrusting tips for spears and swords. I'm waiting to find out if they're legal in Northshield... ooh soo sweet. :o)
… how the body remembers. My manager is looking at a used trumpet for her son. I saw the case and said, “Hey! You found one!” She asked if I know anything about trumpets, and I said I did, so she asked me to have a look at it, to see if it’s worth the asking price. It’s a nice solid student Bach, in decent shape with only one dent (on the bell, easy to remove). It’s nice and clean, the valves and slides are all in good shape, obviously well taken care of. It was nice to have one in my hands again. It made me miss *mine* …
It was much like my last few weeks of work... :o)
Fighting is getting rolling again. I have to re-work my chin strap in my helm, since it stretched and now allows way too much pivot in my helm... it's *bad* for your own helm to hit your nose and chin. (Good thing it was slow work!) Feels good to be back.
