Snakes ... in our yard, not On A Plane

Ben found one of these in our yard today. A "threatened" species. No mowing the snakes, Ben.

We also have frogs that look like the leopard frogs I used to play with all the time as a kid. We would go camping frequently at St. Ambroise beach. Used to be a *fabulous* beach. Long and clean. The water was really shallow for a long way out, so a bunch of our fun was to walk out into the lake, further and further, until our parents would yell for us to come back. Sometimes we'd bring tubes, and then sit in the tubes and let the lake bring us back to the beach. When we were playing with the frogs, we'd dig a hole in the sand. The bottom would get a little water in there and, once the hole was ready, we'd scramble to catch as many frogs as we could and put them into the hole. They could jump out, but it always took them a few tries, so we had time to run for more frogs. We didn't try to *keep* them in the hole, if they jumped out, they were free (though liable to be caught again anyway). Some nights, I remember dreaming the feeling of frogs jumping through my hands, over and over. At the time, it seemed like good fun. I mean, we didn't harm the frogs physically... but I betcha a frog psychologist could've made a mint out at St. Ambroise every fall.

Anyway, there are garter snakes in my yard. :o) Makes it seem more like home. You think that's weird or something? Nah. Remember I grew up in Manitoba. Yes, you read that right, "the largest concentration of snakes in the world". OK, they're *garter* snakes, not pythons or rattlesnakes or something, but there are bijillions of them. Well. Tens of thousands, anyway.

So, one little snake is cute and interesting. And now Ben has to mow *carefully*.

Whee!
