What brand(s) of wool embroidery floss do folks use? I've been using DMC Medicis, but it is getting hard to find.

Anyone have any suggestions on a good way to transfer an embroidery pattern to (red and/or yellow) linen? I tried transfer paper (using a stylus) and it didn't take at all, though it worked perfectly onto various other surfaces like paper, cardboard and skin (!). For the one rose I'm working on so far, I ended up eyeballing the pattern and pencilling it onto the fabric.
Hoping for a great solution...
