Recent Reads: The Keeper’s Six by Kate Elliott – I loved this!

Aside from an awareness that Kate had, at some point in the what-feels-fairly-distant-now past, taken up the mantle of the idea of writing a protagonist who was a mom, I didn’t have any idea what to expect from THE KEEPER’S SIX, and I was enthralled and fascinated by the world and story all the way through.

It’s a CRAZY complex world (which, well: you do know Kate Elliott, right? :)) and lands squarely in the middle of SFF vibes: I cannot tell you if I think it’s more SF or more F. It doesn’t matter, because it’s fantastic regardless of where you try to categorize it. The heroine is a sixty-ish Jewish mother who has Made Mistakes and is living with the consequences, which is okay with her up until the point that her son is endangered, and then the consequences can go hang. :D (Except they can’t: they make her rescue mission much more difficult, in fact.)

The supporting cast are all insanely well realized. The world is EXTREMELY compelling. I have no idea if Kate is planning to write more of these but I would love at least one sequel because I feel like there’s a storyline that 100% wants more to it, but the truth is it doesn’t need anything else: it’s a complete story on its own and it’s just great. I really, really enjoyed it.
