I haven’t forgotten my art project!
I stayed up way too late finishing this Elfquest fan art last week, kind of to see if this entire project has helped any, and honestly? I think it has, at least some. I actually did a pretty good job on Moonshade’s face. Strongbow’s is too long and not wide enough, which is what I almost always do with Elfquest. I do not know how Wendy does it. She’s untouchable. But I’m really pleased with it. If only I could do it without copying, but…we’ll see how that goes.

And generally, one of the things I discovered doing this project is that I still have an unholy fear of giving profiles enough depth. A little of it is that I draw eyes too big*, & possibly part of it is that I have a Disney princess scoop nose myself, but it’s hard to overcome. So I’m practicing, and that’s entirely self-assigned homework. I liked this one best of the ones I did (I’ll post the others if you want me to, but I figure incredibly image-laden posts are not ideal?), and one of my actual artist friends pronounced it “pretty good, actually” (to my “this isn’t bad”) and said this was her favorite of the ones I’d done. :)

I started the actual anatomy course, too, which is…well, it hasn’t been terribly interesting for other people to look at so far, I don’t think, and it’s a lot of little sketchy things, so I just put them all together into a bigger image, but I’ve actually been having quite a lot of fun doing this low-key starting stuff. The 5th picture in the collage was him going “so what i want you to do is find a placeholder figure you LIKE TO DRAW because you should be doing these lil guys for thumbnails etc all the time.”

The one I ended up really enjoying – the lil dudes with the U shaped legs – was one he added as an afterthought, an, “Oh some people do this too” kind of thing and I’ve DONE them before, but I’d never really thought about, like, finding one of these things that I was very fond of doing for placeholder stuff, and having a bunch of them to try all at once was enlightening and cool and I’m looking forward to doing more.
Oh, the second page there, with all the little bendy lines with marks in the middle? The goal is to get good at finding the middle of your line. Turns out I’m pretty good at it already. :)
*that’s the Elfquest influence, and I don’t really try to fight it :)
