Mom and I were right. When we got up this morning, Saddam Hussein was dead.
I will be trying very hard to stay away from news sources for the next several days, until some of the headline brunt of this has passed. I’m appalled.

I am just as appalled and disgusted. Violence only begets violence.
:-(
What about the relatives of all the people Saddam murdered? Don’t they deserve some peace of mind, knowing this monster is no longer around?
As far as violence, the way the country is right now, they’re going to be violent whether Saddam is executed or not. At least they feel they’ve gotten a little justice.
Of course, even if you believe he was someone who deserved to be killed for the sake of vengeance, the way that the trial and execution were handled were a complete farce. I mean, killing him on a Sunni holiday, which was a slap in the face because the Shiites celebrate one day later)? And on Eid al-Adha of all holidays? As Dr. Cole’s article in Salon said, “Through the bumbling of the U.S.-backed regime, justice becomes revenge, and a despot becomes a martyr.”
And saying that the country is violent anyway so it doesn’t make any difference is pretty lame. I’m sure the people whose killers are motivated by Saddam’s death appreciate your sympathy.
Vengence is mine, sayeth the Lord.
It’s not for man to kill man. By killing Saddam, the regime has shown itself to be as violent and muderous as Saddam was. Peace of mind will not come by murdering someone. The people who Saddam wronged will only feel justice is done when their country is at peace and all violence has stopped.
Being as violent and murderous as Saddam was would have involved, y’know, sexual violence against the man for a season before slowly cooking him to death in the blood of his family.
Okay, point. Aside from the first bit, we pretty much did that.
I was trying to put into words just how disgusted I am at hearing that piece of news, but there’s too many levels of contradicting feelings to do so.
The world has gone crazy.
The icon’s way cool, but sadly… voting thusly wouldn’t have much effect on the Iraqi justice system. :P Unless one happened to be an Iraqi citizen, of course.
Ditto. Complete disbelief on this side — nobody believed they’d really execute him until they’d at the very least gotten his side of historic events in Iraq recorded for posterity. But I guess that was too rational a hope :/. I swear we’re heading straight back into the dark ages.
Dude, I feel the same way.
I’m sure he was a terrible person and ‘deserved to die’ and blah blah blah…
But a hanging? I am so unsettled about the entire thing, I really am.
It’s like…is this what being ‘civilized’ is all about? Murdering someone ‘properly’?
(Not sure how I feel about it all, sigh.)
I cannot be appalled and disgusted, even if I wanted to be.
The only thing I can say is that I am over here, in my great little life, dealing with “problems” that other people only wish they could have. There is no way in a million years I could have an adequate understanding of what is going on over there, and what has gone on in the past. Doesn’t seem like I have any right to be appalled and disgusted.
