Picoreview: Ghostbusters

Picoreview: Ghostbusters: Honestly I thought it was pretty bad. By about 2/3rds of the way through I was wishing I’d gone to see Jason Bourne. I mean, there were a few laughs and stuff, but I wasn’t enthralled by Holtzmann, which, after the buildup I expected to be, and just…yeah. I mean, it was okay, but mostly meh.

Then the whole climactic battle came and I felt it finally all pulled together into something I wanted to watch.

More comments behind the cut but it’s I feel it very important to mention up front that I didn’t know until now that I needed a Chris Hemsworth dance movie. :)

I thought the Billy Murray and Dan Akroyd cameos were forced and pointless and didn’t enjoy them at all. Signourney Weaver’s was better and Ernie Hudson’s amused me but I was disappointed that none of them had anything to do with the original film, so bleh.

I kind of liked how Erin’s backstory explained her need for validation, that worked for me, but I was just sort of bored by hers and Abby’s characters. Meh. And I really like Melissa McCarthy, so I was sad to not adore Abby straight off.

I *loved* Patty. She was the most useful person on the team, with her knowledge of the city. I thought they actually overdid the dumb with Kevin, and it was dismaying to me that once he became the bad guy he had a much stronger role than any of the women seemed to. And man, with all the buildup for Holtzmann I expected to love her from the get-go and I was deeply indifferent to her.

So it got to the big fight scene and they’re squished beneath the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man and it goes POP and we get the reveal of Erin with her Swiss Army knife and the gun slung over her shoulder and I thought “Yeah, no, there’s not going to be a moment in this movie that I like better than this, that’s the iconic moment in the film for me.”

And then we got Holtzmann in That Scene and I think I actually said “Well *shit*” loud, because well *shit*, people, I mean, come on, that was just, I mean, well *shit*. That was just..yeah. Well, shit. So yeah, of course we love her.

And then they followed it up with the little speech at the end for her and for god’s sake that’s just, I mean come on.

In the end I’d watch another one, but I’d hope it was more fun.
