Is it just me imagining things, or are people posting less on LJ these days? I know it’s the holidays, which has some effect, but it’s seemed to me for the past three months or so the posting intensity has dropped. Which, if I’m noticing that, really means I need to get out more…
I’ve been taking cold medicine, what with having a cold and all. One of the kinds I took completely dewired my brain. Ted spilled syrup on the floor on Christmas morning, so I was cleaning it up, except I was sitting there on the floor with paper towels and dishrags with sticky syrup all over the place, and I could not, from second to second, remember what it was I was doing down there. o.O The kind I’m taking now doesn’t seem to do that, which is good, ’cause I still need to go do my AAs. Good thing I’m five hours ahead of New York…
Ok, I see today is the kind of day where I end sentences with ellipses. Since that drives me batshit, it is clearly a Sign that I need to go play some City of Heroes do my AAs.
Things have been quiet for the end of the year as everyone rushes about dealing with the holidays, end of year work grinds, and other such rot. It’ll pick up again towards February once people have more free time.
I posit the trajectory hypothesis.
You (generic ‘you’) join LJ: you’re all enthusiastic at first, and post lots, joining in all sorts of conversations all over the place. Then, you move on, your interests change, you’ve already seen all the points made a hundred times, and your posting frequency drops. You may not actually leave, but you can go dormant.
Even if you don’t follow the same trajectory, you may find that a number of people on your Friends List have done. Since a large proportion of that list will be relatively old entries, added when you were freshly joined yourself, the trajectory hypothesis means that the number of posts you see from them will tend to drop off.
Plausible…?
(Damn, an ellipsis has cross-contaminated me!)
It’s not just you, I’ve noticed quite a bit less traffic for a while now. First, I chalked it up to school starting back up in September, but it never picked back up. Since the holidays started in November it’s been even quieter around here.
I think it’s because of the rash of changes, outages, etc that’s been going on lately with SixApart/LiveJournal, so people aren’t wanting to deal with them as much anymore.
I’d have to sadly agree with this. I’ve seen several folks jump ship to other blogging services.
That was pretty much my hypothesis, too, so it certainly seems plausible to *me*. :)
It’s not you…it’s Bearduary Belfast 2007— everyone’s busy growing their beards.
I know I’ve been various too stressed and to lazy to post much more than the occasional meme or rant, but can’t say I’ve noticed a decline much in general. Then again, I keep adding all these spammy communities to my friendslist, so it fills up quickly regardless.
I’ve definitely been posting less lately. There’s some stuff going on RL which has been coloring my attitude and would be negatively coloring my posts (hence the rash of fluffy WoW posts).
As someone else commented, SixApart’s changes are influencing me some as well. More than half the time I post comments lately I can’t because I get errors. One time in ten I can’t load LJ pages, getting error messages then too.
I hope your cold passes quickly.
I haven’t been reading LJ lately, so I don’t know. Once NaNo looms, I drop all such entertainments. And December comes with its own set of interruptions.
Glad your new cold medicine doesn’t leave you quite so loopy.
I’ve been posting very poorly and VERY bad about reading for a while now. I want to read again but I’m starting to hate dealing with web browsers. They’re just slow and painful. Maybe I should see if RSS readers are less awful.
