art class: lesson one

I’ve been drawing just enough now to remember that I think I could be pretty good at this if I practiced a great deal more. It’s inspired me to, well. About a hundred thousand years ago I bought a basic drawing course on Udemy, and I’ve been moved to start it. Do I think I’ll do the whole thing? No, not really. But the first assignment is a 2-part project to do your best at drawing a realistic eye, which you follow along with the course teacher to do. Here’s day one’s effort:

Part two was “finish drawing the eye,” & let’s not kid anybody, this is probably the best eye I’ve ever drawn, but I sort of feel it’s not that hard when I’m following every step the dude is doing, & I like doodling eyes anyway. So, voila.

The way this class is structured, at the end we’re supposed to draw an eye again, and see how much we’ve improved.

I. well. I’ll be surprised if I’ve improved dramatically, because I DO like drawing eyes, they’re one of my go-tos for doodling, and I think this is pretty good, if I do say so myself. I can see room for improvement, but…I’ll be surprised if it’s DRASTICALLY better. Pleased, mind you, but surprised.

And as I told my (comic book artist) friend Matthew Dow Smith over on BS the other day, drawing one eye in isolation is pretty easy. Drawing two that more or less match, now… :)

Anyway, naturally, having done half of one assignment I then went through Udemy and found like seven other classes I’d like to take, as if I was in any danger of actually finishing this one. The fact that I did even the first lesson is a great triumph. :)
