MeCon, a SF/F convention up in Belfast, is the weekend after next (August 4-6). I could fairly reasonably take the train up to Dublin with Geni on Thursday, then up to Belfast on Friday, then come back to Cobh late Sunday night or on Monday morning. I am torn on whether to do this or not.
On the one hand, it’d be an opportunity to meet and Ken MacLeod and Ian McDonald and … well, you’re perfectly capable of reading the guest list. ;) It’d be a chance in general to meet other SF geeks in Ireland, which is good. The panels and whatnot look pretty entertaining, there’s stuff about comics, which is of great interest to me (especially since I missed all the comic stuff at P-Con), and I’d no doubt have a good time. OTOH, it’d mean abandoning Ted for *days*, as well as obliterating any hope of writing during that time.
(Polls are fun. O.O)

You left out: “– and going to conventions is sort of a part of the whole ‘writing for a career’ thing that I’m doing.”
Yeah, I agree. While I think your books are excellent, not everyone knows that yet. The kind of fans at conventions are often the bellwethers of geek society, so it’s worthwhile to interact with them from time to time, and they’ll pick up this Urban Shaman that the funny American who lives in Ireland wrote, and then of course love it, and read all your books and start up MurphyCon which will actually happen and we’ll all come up to Ireland and have a party with unicorns and dancing boys!
But if it’s a con all about you, don’t you have to go?
Oh, wait, maybe that’s not what “MeCon” means…
Yes. Somehow, quite horribly, they seem to have not gotten the message about the “me” part of that con!
Wow, that looks like a great convention – I am so totally going to that! I hope you manage to figure out how to make it happen!
Of course you should go! We’ll be there on Sunday, but not Saturday, and are intending to spend a good bit of time getting reacquainted with Leah Moore & John Reppion, who were good fun at P-CON, as well as yourself, who we got to see so little of, due to circumstances beyond your control.
Tell them you’re coming, and would be willing to do panels. Do you need an email address for the chairman?
But you’ll show them all!
Er…it’s not lost writing time. It’s…uh…market research? Um…or maybe one of those experiences that makes your writing more gooder?
