any dream will do

Well! To my complete astonishment, Lewis the blond kid finally turned it on in the very very last song. He and Lee (who’s the pro who’s been doing understudying for several years) did a performance of “Oh What A Circus” from Evita, and it was the first time I believed in Lewis’s performance. It made me sit there and try to think if he’d done any other musical theatre songs, and I don’t think he did. It may be that he really is a musical theatre performer. (I just checked. He did not do any other musical theatre pieces.)

That opinion was shored up by the sing-off, which he and Ben the pop star were in. They did “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables, and although I like Ben better, Lewis did a better performance as well as being vocally stronger. I believed him again, which just astonishes me, because not once in the entire run of the show did I think he was compelling to watch on stage until those last two pieces.

I still don’t think he’ll win. I think it’s really down to Lee and Keith. Lee, tonight, did a not especially inspiring version of Bon Jovi’s “Living On A Prayer”. Oddly, I think he’s got too good a voice to be a rock singer. Or too much control, or something. I was unmoved, and you all know how much I like Bon Jovi. :) Keith did “Could It Be Magic”, which I was vaguely familiar with, and he was once more vocally the star of the show.

They also did “Under Pressure” as their last group piece, and that went about as you’d expect it to. I mean, they’re all talented and they did their best, but it wasn’t David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, and it’s really impossible to expect anyone to be, but you necessarily compare it to the original, and therefore, it wasn’t good enough. They had the same problem with a different Queen song earlier in the series. It’s just … well. Freddie Mercury. :)

So next week Lewis, Lee and Keith are in the final, and it’s entirely up to the viewing audience, and it’ll be very interesting to see what happens. :)

In revisions news, I got the next chapter done and broke 100K. I’m pushing 450 pages, and tomorrow ought to break it pretty easily. So. Five more chapters after that, I think, and they all have to be completely totally revised.

  1. I have a random question: How many words was URBAN SHAMAN?

Oh, and another random question: What style do you like to write in? Do you type double-spaced or single and what type of font?

I don’t know why, I’m just curious about how everyone writes right now. :P

  2. I’ve somehow got sucked into watching this, without being aware it was happening.

Hmmm, I did think Ben should have gone tonight. I didn’t think his voice was as strong as the others.

  3. About 110K, in the end. I believe the final manuscript was 444 pages.

I write in manuscript format: Courier/Courier New 12, 25pt spacing, 1″ margins all around, 4 carriage returns at the start of each chapter before the chapter heading. I use Microsoft Word and have the magnification set to 95% so I can see just slightly more of what I’m working on all at once.

  4. Yeah, he should’ve, but I was surprised by my turn-around on that. I don’t like Lewis much at all, and I’d have said it would take a miracle for me to think he belonged in the final 3. He performed a miracle, apparently. :)

  5. Missed the results show so thanks for the update. I am slightly surprised Lewis made it. I thought the Evita number was terrific but HATED his Sweet Caroline. YickYickYicketyYICK! I also agree about Lee’s Bon Jovi solo but thought a big part of that antiseptic quality was the backing music which seemed just too clean and, well, ballsless.

Go you on the revisions too!

  6. I thought his “Sweet Caroline” was pretty awful, too, but then, I don’t like the song very much either. Ben, though, didn’t do what ALW asked with “Ease On Down”, and I don’t know enough about the song to know if it coulda been done the way he asked. But the Evita number astounded me, and even if I don’t like him, Lewis is vocally stronger than Ben. So while I wouldn’t go see Lewis in London, I guess I can’t blame ALW for picking him. I don’t really think it matters anyway. It’ll be Keith or Lee. :)

  7. Go Keith! I have not managed to see a single one of his solos yet and was just rooting for him because, on physicality, he seemed to be the least cliched option. I take your opinion of his talent on trust because a) you seem to know what you are talking about and b) it isn’t the votes of libidinous, teeny-bopper viewers that are keeping him in the competition.

  8. Queen is the best. i don’t know why these people keep trying to do their music when they just CAN’T. I have only seen one person ever do a Queen song comparably to them, and, amazingly, it was locally here in a karaoke bar. A woman did Bohemian Rhapsody and actually did an EXCELLENT job. Not Freddy Mercury, but a strong female version.

Kind of like, why do they keep redoing hit songs and making “remixes”. They’re never as good as the original.

BTW, happy birthday. I tried to call but the phone number I have for you was disconnected. :(

You trying to tell me something? LOL
