vaguely related to visualization

(Why is it I ever seem to manage a post with content on weekends, when no one is about? Nevermind that, I’ll post anyway.)

On the visualization topic of which I am so fond, a question of music:

Do you *hear* music in your head like you would hear a radio? Except inside your head, of course, not in your ears?

Because I don’t. Twice in my life I’ve heard a burst of music inside my head, and it was extraordinary and strange. Otherwise when I get a song stuck in my head, it’s just the words. An … idea … of the tune, for lack of a better description (and the language is not well suited to this topic, any more than it is suited to the topic of visualization or lack thereof), but definitely not the actual music. Perhaps an idea of the singer’s voice, too; it’s certainly not my own voice, anyway. But really, it’s words.

Is that how it works for you?

  1. Yes. Like it is on the radio. When I get a song stuck in my head, it’s the same passage of the music and lyrics over and over in my head, and very annoying.

But! I’ve never had the urge to write a book either. I love to read, but have no interest in writing my own stories at all. So maybe my mind is just more inclined to remember all the music and yours is inclined to write books?

  2. I hear it exactly as I’d hear it on the radio, but like Laura, it’s usually only a part of the song on loop :)

  3. I’m a musician, so I hear music in my head all day long. Sometimes I have to try to do things to make it go away. I’ve woken up before and had to grab my guitar and a recorder in the middle of the night to write down a song I was dreaming!
It has its ups and its downs. When a song gets stuck in my head it can drive me crazy because I can hear everything, the different parts, the different instruments, the annoying part that won’t go away is in the equivalent of Ultrasound.

  4. Nope, I hear random music all the time. I suspect it’s because I have a permanent retainer, so I’m still picking up all of those radio stations from when I was a brace-faced middle schooler. :)
