Are we doing the 2024 Retrospective thing? Yeah? We are? Okay, well, I did a metric shit tonne this year, and I know it, and of course I also didn’t get anything like nearly as much as I needed or wanted to done. But let’s focus on the positive.
I wrote in the region of 400K words, I think, with 4 books (WEAR WOLF, DEATH OF AN IRISH DRUID (out in January), OCTOBEARFEST and PARTRIDGE IN A BEAR TREE), 2 novellas (LION ON LOAN, KOALAFIED FOR LOVE), a massive revision which will hopefully sell in the new year, and a bunch of book proposals.
I read, um, 58 books (it’ll be 59 by the end of the day), which surpassed my annual goal of 52, so that’s good. I drew more this year than I’ve done in probably a decade, which on one hand isn’t saying much but on the other is saying quite a lot. My friend Tade is responsible for most of it, tbh. I also spent a great deal of the day before yesterday painstakingly struggling to put together a web comic template that was not actually difficult, just totally out of my experience and therefore…incredibly difficult.
I’ve knitted quite a bit the past couple months, as you know, in an attempt to stay offline more. It’s worked, more or less. Well, no, it has worked, I just still spend too much time online. Which has been true for over 35 years now, so realistically, I mean, well, you know. :)
Yeah, IDK. Watched all of Elementary, which I liked a lot. Sniffled over the end of Lower Decks. Started watching The Queen’s Gambit yesterday (it’s as good as everyone says it is).
This morning I gave up on my two newest ear piercings, which keep seeming like they’ve healed but only if I never change the earrings & sleep on a travel pillow, and I am tired of sleeping on a travel pillow. I’m very sad about this and don’t know if my resolution to let them heal up will last or if I’ll end up trying again tomorrow, but… I’m tired of sleeping on a travel pillow. -sigh-
Mostly, though, if that’s my worst complaint… I mean, it’s not, I lost a bunch of stuff on Dropbox and didn’t realize it until it was too late to get them to retrieve it, and … I mean, -gestures at the world-, but it hasn’t been a terrible year for me. Just a really tiring one. I really mostly feel like I got through it, which is kind of all that you can ask for, isn’t it?
How about you?

Happy New Year, Catie!
2024 was not stellar for me. Spent the whole year not hearing back on a graphic novel script I turned in (and got paid for). The publisher said it might be some time before it went into the pipeline, but it feels like the Sword of Damocles hanging over me, where I could be asked for revisions at any time. (Hoping the project wasn’t killed altogether.) Other projects in limbo or in early stages.
Going to try to make 2025 the year I push myself to do more prose. I love the comics medium, but as “just a writer” (as in, I can’t draw my own books at a professional level), I can’t make them happen on my own. So prose offers an opportunity for more control. You’re a big inspiration in that regard!
Wishing you a happy, healthy, bountiful 2025!
Paul
