Recent Reads: LIVING IN THREES

There’s a book I read when I was about 10, in 6th grade, probably, or possibly 5th. Anyway. I don’t remember the title or author, but the gist of the story was about girl who perhaps became ill and traveled back to ancient Egypt and lived there for a time. At the end of the story there’s some question about whether it really happened or was a fever dream. I loved the book intensely (I’m going to have to make the internet tell me what it was CAT IN THE…

Picoreview: Rush

Picoreview: Rush: does what it says on the tin. Actually, it does more than that. It’s a very, very good movie, and this from someone who hasn’t got two sh…akes…to give when it comes to car racing. Chris Hemsworth plays more or less to type as a big, likeable jackass; Daniel Brühl, whom I haven’t seen before and therefore couldn’t be playing to type, was not especially likeable but wasn’t supposed to be, either. If there was a flaw, it was that I didn’t feel the instant and profound antagonism…

big career change!

I’ve alluded to this but not spoken much about it: early this year, my agency and I parted ways over what amounts to a disgreement about the direction of my career. It’s a little nerve-wracking to split with an agent of ten years (hence my reluctance to talk about it much!), but in last month the rest of my life slowed down enough that I was able to finally focus on getting a new agent. And I am now delighted to announce that henceforth, I will be a client of…

Picoreview: Jurassic Park

Picoreview: Jurassic Park: Still huge fun. It’s playing in IMAX 3D here right now, and I kind of wanted to go see it again, and then thought I should bring my nephews, who, at 8 and 10, are pretty well the ideal age to see it and have the pants scared off them. I mean, they’ve seen it before, but only on a TV screen, which is just not the same thing at all. It scared the pants off them. :) The younger one spent 4/5ths of the movie either…

Sons of Anarchy & Jericho

I’ve had Sons of Anarchy highly recommended to me, and it stars Ron Perlman, so I watched the first episode a few nights ago. I didn’t like it very much–every single person in the story is a right bastard, and it’s clear the story will be about the evolution of Our Hero (Charlie Hunnam, aka “Hey, that’s the guy from Pacific Rim!”) from a right bastard into someone who does the right thing. It’s established straight off, particularly since we get to see him beat the shit out of somebody…
