But I just got a *lovely* compliment from a friend of mine, who said on Twitter “CE Murphy is wonderfully unkind to her characters, and you understand why they’re making this mistake even as you get that it’s a bad idea.” That is by far one of the nicest things anybody’s ever said about my writing. :) The understanding more than the unkindness, I know I’m awful to my poor characters, but it’s so nice to see that the motivations are making sense. unexpectedly good!
Yesterday was an unexpectedly good writing day. Ted took on the role of Primary Caregiver (which he’s very good about doing at the weekends so I can work), and in a desperate bid to not get further behind on Nano, I wrote 1800 words on it in the morning. Nothing like care packages from America, full of Good Stuff, to brighten up a day! Even if it was a pretty bright day to begin with. :) Thank you, Mary Anne! I think we now have about 7 pounds of chocolate chips, which is hysterical. :) Writing did not go quite as planned today. Young Indiana woke up 25 minutes into his nap and didn’t want to be put back down after I rescued him, so I had a nice rest with the baby and, er, wrote about 200 words…

sudden epiphany!
So I was thinking about the Old Races Short Story Project, and about the fact that if they’re ever collected into a book I clearly need to write at least one story to go before the chronologically-first one I have now, because it’s pretty sad. But it’s also fairly early in terms of Old Races history, so I was trying to think of stuff that would come before, and suddenly I had an Epiphany! about the origin of the Old Races.
