– hosts file not corrupted.
– MS malevolent software thing run. found nothing.
– spybot S&D found nothing
– dns flush had no effect
– not going through a proxy to reach teh intarwebs, so that’s not the problem
– followed
– have not yet tried Hijack This
– currently running ad-aware ad-ware didn’t fix it
– have a log file from
– this is really a pain in the *ass*
And Ted’s machine is still perfectly sane?
*sigh*
Unless your machine and his are using different DNS servers (which is unlikely if they’re both running DHCP, and I’d assume they probably are), I think it has to be something locally screwed.
Ted’s machine is still perfectly sane. Ad-Aware is coming up with some hits that S&D didn’t, so maybe that’ll help…
Hmm, that’s hopeful.
But ultimately unsuccessful. I’ve had enough fun; time to go do something else. :p

Taken from various spysites:
Hi Dudes, the problem with this seems to be with 2 pesky dns server saved in your isp network details,
normally your isp network connection should have “obtain dns automatically” selected but if you are having this problem it is more than likely that yours will show:
85.255.115.6
and 85.255.112.20
I have been looking at this over the last few weeks and only found that is was the dns redirecting me tonight, like all of you i tried every spyware finder known to mankind and found nothing.
it was only when i was pinging and route tracing a couple of affected sites i found them all to show the same ip trace. hmmmmm
hope this helps and if it does – spread the word.
cheers

Hi,
if you go start – all programs – accessories – communications – network connections
you should see an icon for your internet / isp connection.
right click on it and select properties.
goto the networking tab and with the internet protocol tcp / ip row highlighted click on the properties button.
make a note of the dns settings and then chck “Obtain DNS Server address automatically”
*laughs* That was an easy one if fixed that way. I assumed it was one of the spyware that changed the DNS without the change being visible in the control panel.
