buh.

It’s Thursday. Somehow I was not prepared for it to be Thursday. I had a specific set of things I was going to start on Thursday (like getting up earlier), and it was only in the shower at 8:25 that the befuddled idea that I had in fact blown this plan slowly set in. This, despite having discussed with Ted that yesterday was Wednesday. You’d think I’d know by now that Thursday doth follow Wednesday like the night the day, but somehow it totally escaped me. Yes, yesterday was Wednesday, and I had one more day of sleeping in before Thursday, was somehow the thought. How’d that happen?

I got some of the patterns I ordered. Actually, I got all of the patterns I’ve *ordered*, but not all of the ones I’ve thought about ordering. :) I’m no longer certain the one that looks like this one will look good on me (I tried on something wrap-aroundy like that recently and I just have too much rib and too little waist), but I’ll make one anyway, ’cause why not. Maybe I know a busty size 10 who could have it, if it turns out to not look good on me.

I need better snacks. The grapes I keep buying keep turning out gooshy, and apples are a crap shoot (really frustrating, because the green grocer in Athy consistently had brilliant apples, and I haven’t found anywhere here that does yet), and the Kellogg snack bar things are too falsely sweet/commercial tasting/something to be satisfying. I did go look up snack bar recipes and found a few that look good, so I’m going get the ingredients and give ’em a whirl, but in the meantime I keep eating raisinets (which aren’t even filling) and graham crackers (which are, but you can only eat so many graham crackers in a day). I should boil up a few eggs so I have those handy, though I can’t eat too many or my tummy gets upset.

Any suggestions on good snack foods? I’m not much of a fruit eater (I’ll eat apples, grapes, pineapple, though it tears my mouth up, and sometimes oranges, but they’re so much work. fuzzy fruits are right out. ick. bananas are fine in things, but I can’t bear them alone, and berries are only edible when drowned in whipped cream or otherwise disguised, which, I suspect, somewhat lessens the “good for you” value…), I don’t like raw veggies at all, and experience tells me that while I don’t dislike them, I won’t eat nuts (unless they’re in gorp). I’m sort of left with what, cheese and crackers? Not a very adventuresome eater, I, much to my husband the chef’s frustration.

I better go have some breakfast, print out my revision letter, and get to work, huh? Ok. I’ll do that. *scoots*

  1. Wow. Yeah, I recommend cheese. And perhaps crackers.
Freezing grapes keeps them from getting as gooshy.

  2. For fresh fruit that will last longer try Marks and Spencer’s. The English Market has a stall that does dried fruit and nuts, and has a good fruit and veg section.

What I snack on is Digestive Biscuits with a cup of tea, or I toast a slice of Soda/brown bread and have it with Butter and/or Jam.

This weekend I will be having Scones with clotted Cream and blueberry jam…Once I actually go make the scones. :)

  3. I was wondering about M&S, since when I was in there the other day the fruit looked a cut above. Thanks!

Digestive biscuits = graham crackers. :)

Oooh. Scones with clotted cream and jam. That sounds loooovely.

  4. I know. I’m picky, aren’t I. :)

I presume one has to eat the grapes frozen to maintain the !gooshiness?

  5. Digestive biscuits = graham crackers.

    Really? The things your learn!

  6. Yup! And we think ‘graham cracker’ is a much nicer name than ‘digestive biscuit’. :)

  7. Alternate suggestion: Eat smaller meals more often, so you don’t get the need to snack? And drink enough water? Works for me, except when I’m at work and there’s no food available after 1 PM and I need to stay until 5. The usual fix then is a coffee latte, but I guess you don’t drink such unhealthy things :)

  8. Well, yes, but then I have to figure out what to eat for the smaller meals. Snacks, to my mind, basically are the smaller meals. :)

  9. Whatever you eat for regular meals, divided by two? Nuke some leftovers and call it a snack? Would require actually leaving leftovers, mind. Hmm, did you try those little soup-in-a-cup things?
(This is me, flicking. One hour left at work and only the boring things left to to… Did I mention it’s lovely out here? THey predict close to 30C for the weekend! I’m off to buy sunscreen once the workday is over :)

  10. They pronounce “graham” funny, too.

My middle name is Graeme, after my father. People keep trying to pronounce that “gram” like the way they pronounce “graham” here, and I tell them, it has two syllables in it, you morons.

  11. peanut butter or almond butter on a rice cake. topped with banana (if you’d like- I don’t tolerate bananas well, but it’s really yummy)

  12. Apparently they are similar but not the same. Graham crackers predate the digestive biscuit by 100 years, and although there’s a similarity in the taste (because they share ingredients) they’re still distinct foods.

Of course, both graham crackers and digestives can be used for cheesecake so it’s all good in my book.

  13. I always thought digestives were arrowroot >.>

Graham is what you make cheesecake crust with.

  14. I got curious about the ‘Graham’ being pronounced ‘gram’ so i looked them up… Graham crackers only predate the digestive by 10 years.

But either way… Cheese cake is a good snack!

  15. Have you thought about dried fruit? You can often buy already dried fruit at grocery-type stores (I think someone mentioned it at the M&S above) and if you really get into it you can then get one of those fruit-drying racks and do it yourself if you want.

Dried apple slices work well to just have something to chew on, and you already seem to be consuming dried grapes. (True, you’re doing dried grapes dipped in chocolate, but…)

Actually, dried meat (aka jerky) is also good, if you can find a place that sells it without a ton of spices and preservatives packed in.

  16. What about Peanut butter on celery? Or the quintessential kids snack, Ants on a Log, which just adds raisins on top? Grapefruit (if you can stand it, which I can’t)? Melon? Oooh, there’s always my favorite, cantaloupe or honeydew with a slice of prosciutto. Of course, you’d have to be spare with the prosciutto because it’s not terribly good for you.

  17. Those dehydrator thingies are neat… I’ve always wished I could get one so I could make healthy dried “fruit rollups.” But then I know it would just sit around gathering dust after the first few times I made stuff. :-)

  18. I always try to have a bit of a protein with my snacks so that I don’t have a spike in blood sugar, then the inevitable crash that makes me feel snack-y again. So I would recommend that you try a bit of peanut butter with your grahams

Or one of my favorite quick snacks is a slice of ham with a slice of cheese rolled up with a slice of pickle nestled inside.

Or a slice of turkey lunchmeat spread with garlic-herb cream cheese and rolled up.

Or a tortilla rolled up with peanut butter & honey & dried cranberries or any of the above lunchmeat combos.

Or quick quesadilla (cheese & salsa & tortilla, nuked or toaster oven’d).

  19. Or chicken or tuna or salmon salad with crackers.

(Okay, that really is the last one!)

  20. Popcorn! Mmmm…. spritzed with olive oil and salted with sea salt.

Or for people who can have dairy products, doused in melted butter, then coated liberally with powdered cheddar (*real* powdered cheddar, from a cheese company, not the fake cheddar-flavored stuff).

  21. Ummmm. I always did, so I’m not certain. From a scientific standpoint, I’d say that freezing them will halt the cellular degradation but at the same time the thawing process will create its own changes in consistency and texture.
