the essential kit

Herein lies a rant.

Look, I don’t know why it is that I get bent out of shape more easily over injustices in comicbookland than in sffland, but I pretty much do. I’ve certainly identified myself as a SFF reader longer (although by only half a decade or so, probably), but somehow comics tend to hit me right in the outrage. Here is today’s link hitting me in the outrage. The short version is that it’s Mark Millar (whom I have met and who is *insanely* charming in person), Todd McFarlane, Len Wein (the…

Elfquest: Skywise & Cutter

a useful item :)

*bemused* You know what really useful item I have here? A signed, limited edition, *still shrink-wrapped* leatherbound edition of the Starblaze Donning ‪#‎Elfquest‬ GN #3. 30 years old! I also have a not-shrinkwrapped copy of it and of #4, and 2 copies each of the softbound editions, and as usually happens when I notice these things, it’s hard to convince myself I shouldn’t go hunt down 1, 2, and the omnibus edition I saw once when I was about 12 and did not have the $150 for (of course) and…

Picoreview: Supernatural, S7

Picoreview: Supernatural, Season 7: The poor boys. I mean, that’s pretty well the picoreview for any season of Supernatural, and S7 was not the worst of what they’ve been through. (Nevermind that I spent two Bobby episodes and the Felicia Day episode gnawing on my knuckles and with my knees drawn against my chest.) I do love this show. I’d kind of paled on it in s6, and we hadn’t gotten around to watching s7 (obviously), but then Amanda Tapping was announced as being in s8, so we had to…

social media, social change

My fandom is a mess. Not just my fandom. The halls of my chosen career, too. SFF is a mess, in a political sense, with regards to sexism and racism. There’s the very recent problem with the SFWA Bulletin (type SFWA into Google and that link is the first thing that comes up), there’s the nobody-is-surprised news that Tor editor Jim Frenkel has had a formal report filed against him for sexual harrassment, there’s there genuinely bizarre fake geek girl hubub…it all goes on and on, and it’s being discussed…

Defiance

We’ve started watching Defiance. One of my early reactions was “Who *is* that?” about Datak Tarr, who of course turned out to be the utterly wonderful Tony Curran and once I knew that I didn’t know how I couldn’t see it. (I had, in fact, said, “I know who that is but I can’t see it past the makeup.”) Anyway, he’s great and Jaime Murray, who plays his wife, Stahma Tarr, is O.M.G. amazing. OMG. She’s worth watching the show all for herself, although I like other characters as well.…
