chug chug chug

Chugging along at quite a good clip on these edits. I won’t get ’em done in time to photocopy them this afternoon (particularly if I sit here writing LJ entries), but I should be able to get them copied and into the mail tomorrow morning. I still like the book. I hope that’s a good sign. :)

Things I have learned today while copyediting:

1. The phrase is “to the manner born”, though I’d always assumed it was “to the manor born”. Both, however, are in frequent use.

2. The spelling is “straitlaced”, not “straight-laced”, though again both are in common use.

THE QUEEN’S BASTARD, according to Amazon, will be out at the end of April, a whole month earlier than I thought it would be released.

I must remember to make a note about the spacing of my initials when I send the copy edits back.

I think I will spend tomorrow having a Day Off, and try to read two or three more of the books on the TBR shelf, which (despite people continuing to send me books) is slowly shrinking. I’ll go back to work on Wednesday. The next month is just going to be total chaos. Oi.

The clone thing was stupid and unbelievable. Ironically, the only *reason* it was stupid and unbelievable is because it hadn’t actually been set up anywhere in 6th season. I’d have accepted it fully if we’d had even a hint, but we didn’t, and their retrofit to make it work didn’t.

Also (ok, you knew I couldn’t keep it to one comment, didn’t you?), irrationally, the speech that the new editor gave Lois about ending up forty and fat with kids and unable to look at a newspaper…made me feel like *Chloe* was the one who ended up in that position, because Chloe isn’t in the comics. I know, I *know* this makes no sense, and yet I can’t help thinking it. Have they introduced her in the comics yet? …no, I see it’s planned for next year, according to Wikipedia. Apparently I’ll be very glad when she /is/ introduced. :)

  1. Chloe is the hottest chick on that show. For some reason the show’s creators keep finding reasons to show her off in a bra. I’m not complaining, but it’s pretty weird.

And I recall “To The Manor Born” being a British comedy with a title that was deliberately riffing on “to the manner born” and which may have unintentionally propagated the mistake.

  2. Agreed on the clone thing. I spent several minutes thinking I must have missed an episode, because they couldn’t be doing such a blatant retrofitting. Surely their writers are better than that…

I felt bad for Chloe, too. She’s pretty much my favorite character in the show, and she got stomped pretty hard.

  3. I *knew* I hadn’t missed an episode, as we just finished watching the entirety of season 6, but yeah, wow, that was badly done. I did wonder if they’d cut scenes that should’ve been aired, but I really think it was just a big screwup.

Chloe’s probably my favorite character too. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with her this season. I’ve only seen the first 3 episodes (no idea how many’ve aired) and probably won’t watch more until December at the soonest, so I shall have to suffer in silence a while. :)

  4. Chloe is in fact the hottest chick on the show.

And yeah, in looking up the phrase I learned about the tv show. I just always assumed it was “manor” because I assumed it meant “born above you slobs”, which “manner” also suggests, but “manor” suggests more, or something. :) But no, the phrase is attributed to one W. Shakespeare, and is “manner”, so Bob’s your uncle.

  5. Well at least I only have to wait until april for the next of your books. When is House of Cards due out? I just consumed Heart of Stone and shall be waiting impatiently for the next in that series.

If one consumes a book, are they required to regurgitate it word for word? :)

The only reason the book lasted two days was that we had to fit in watching Elizabeth and Nightmare Before Christmas 3-D in the middle of the day.

  6. Actually, HOUSE OF CARDS is out in March. So you don’t even have to wait until April. :)

  7. I think there’ve only been 3 so far.

My take? The writers wanted desperately to kill off Lana, so they sabotaged the storyline.

I wish Clark could end up with Chloe. She’s so much better matched to him than that ditz Lois.

  8. So far I am unimpressed with season 7. When they get back to the superheroing, I might start caring again.

  9. and takes 4 hours to read…

Wish I could take tomorrow off. But not only did I get audited for 3 hours today but I have to do it again tomorrow…

  10. To be honest after watching the first four episodes (fifth is due out on friday) I almost got the impression Chloe would have being better off not coming back to life!

Yes the clone thing was a bit odd, and very disturbing. “Hi i am Lex Luthor, and i have a clone of my wife hidden in a Dam”.

And as many others have said, i really think Chloe is my favourite Character in the series, however the writers seem to take great pleasure in dumping from a height on her.

  11. The spelling is “straitlaced”, not “straight-laced”, though again both are in common use.

Of course, just because something is in common usage doesn’t necessarily mean it is correct!

My own pet hate is till (or ’till, or til) as an abreviation of until, when clearly what they want to write is ’til. How hard can it be to get it right?

  12. ‘To the manor born’ started out as a pun I thought and a TV series with Penelope Keith. ‘Straitlaced’ is pretty much a lost cause though, even though the meaning is definitely ‘strait’ as in dire, ‘tight’ ‘narrow’ in other words than ‘straight’; after all what self respecting bodice would be seen all ‘bendy-laced’?!

  13. What weirds me out, although I’m not complaining as such, is that early in the series they made a hard drive towards “psychobitch” with Chloe, but then suddenly realized that’s where they were going with Lana, I guess, and veered sharply away to the extent that she became The Only Sane Person In Fictional Kansas.

Also, I hate their Jimmy Olsen and despair that he can’t die because he’s a classic comic character. I don’t care if he is Iceman’s twin brother. (Although, wait until you see the episode _Cure_ so you can slap your forehead at the outrageous swipe^W^Whomage.)

  14. I wish

No – I read the book then I tried to sleep – and tried and tried.

About 2 hours later I succeeded.

And then despite 3 alarm clocks I overslept.

  15. Having just seen episode 3 last night, I can’t say I’m feeling all that eager to catch up with the rest…

I was thinking about the clone thing a bit, trying to come up with a way they could have foreshadowed it without making it even more blindingly obvious that Lana hadn’t really [SPOILER HIDDEN FOR THE RANDOM SOUL WHO HASN’T CAUGHT THIS SEASON].

Really, I think it could have heightened the creepiness factor a lot. Rather than trying to use so many secrets to hook readers, why not tell them what’s going on from time to time, and let that tension draw people along?
