Those of you who know anything about me will not be surprised to hear I’m having compulsive hair disorder symptoms again.
For once, amazingly enough, I can pretty definitively say this is not a result of being unhappy with either my weight or my book, which are the usual two triggers. I’m just bloody tired of my hair. Or, more accurately, of the style it’s currently cut in. This may be because it’s not cut in much of a style at all. It also has a bit to do with the ends seeing very, *very* scraggly to me, although I’m having a little bit of a hard time telling of that’s because of where I bleached it or if this whole bizarre “Hi, Catie! You’re thirty-two years old and you have inexplicably gotten wavy hair, which you’ve wanted all your life!” thing just gives the ends a different texture. It might be some of both.
So anyway. I don’t actually want to cut the length off, which is usually how CHD manifests itself, but I’m really tired of the current look and I don’t feel like it does much of anything for my face. My inclination is to maybe get some long bang/layers cut around my face, although I wasn’t particularly happy with that last time around. Then again, last time, I was trying to get layers around my face and ended up with a layer around my whole head at chin or whatever it was length and that wasn’t what I wanted.
I was looking at something like this, although realistically I would never bother to make my hair that big (I don’t even know how), so I don’t know if it’d be anything like an improvement over what I’ve got right now. And I fear getting a cut I’m not happy with will just piss me off and cause me to go get it all chopped off, which is pretty typical Kit behavior.
OTOH, I’d end up with some kind of bob cut with bangs if I did that, and that looks really cute on me, so maybe it wouldn’t be a total loss.
Stupid hair.
Hi Catie –
As a stop-gap measure til you work out what you want, do you happen to have one of those thick-barrelled curling irons? I was desperate to do something with my hair but didn’t want to lose the length. I found a curling iron about 4cms in diameter that does really luscious waves, not curls – and it hides any scraggly ends. It takes about 2 minutes to just do the ends of your hair in the morning, and even when it’s pulled up in a ponytail it still looks nice. Of course you have to be careful you don’t fry your hair too much, but it might buy you some time while you sort out what cut you want instead of doing something you regret later. And of couse all the extra money from Veronica Lake impressions won’t go astray… #B)

Is this where we tell you to hang in there, X3 is right around the corner?
I think so, yes. :)
*laugh* Cute icon. *laugh*
you mean…*gasp*… *do* something with my hair every day?
I donno. That sounds like an *awful* lot of work. *Doing* something with my hair.
Of course, I’ve always wanted to pull off the Veronica Lake look… :)
…I too am having CHD, but I’ve decided rather than cut it to get it braided for a little while, then see how I feel about it in May. My braids won’t last that long (I have very soft, curly hair) but it will at least give me a break my hair for a bit, which would be very nice.
CHD–I’ve been suffering from it most of my life, and yet I never knew that my disorder has a name. I feel so much better–now that I finally have a diagnosis, perhaps I can finally take the necessary steps toward treatment. :-)
Seriously, I hate doing stuff with my hair, too, so it mostly just hangs there (unless it’s really in the way, in which case it goes under a hat or headscarf or into a bun). I’d hate to have a cut I actually have to style! So I usually end up giving myself bangs or trying out a new shampoo. For my really desperate flare-ups of CHD, there’s always henna. :-)
Welcome to the ranks of those with wavy hair! If you haven’t already, you will shortly discover all haircuts must take into account wavy hair’s desire to form little “horns” of hair at the temples. You know, where straight-haired people can do that “feathering” thing?
On the plus side, if you get a cut that’s designed to look touseled (I recommend getting a razor cut instead of scissor cut) you pretty much don’t need to do anything other than towel-dry and comb out in the morning. If it’s below freezing and you’re going out, a hair dryer is recommended. :-)
Oh, and that hair picture you showed? My guess is some sort of styling gel, then the hair is blowdried with a brush lifting up from scalp to end. I had a cut similar when I tried to be “modern”. Too much work. I went back to “fluffy”. :-)
Ah… I through this about every six months. I gotta color or cut or both something. The last time I cut off about a foot and a half of hair going from midback to above my chin. I also tend to do it on a whim–don’t consider it. Just wake up, decide to do it, get it done. Keeps me from overanalyzing ;)
Maybe get a couple of inches off (to get rid of the scraggly ends) and a good dose of vivid hair color? That usually staved off my “gotta cut it all off” urges… for a little while, at least.
Oh god yes! The Horns of Doom! *shrieks and runs away*.
Try getting a trim and see if that doesn’t make you feel better.
Thing about bangs and bangs with curly hair is that they can be a constant battle everyday in every weather condition.
I think you will hate those long bangs.
They are in your face aways! You can’t rake them back in a pony tail and they don’t stay behind your ears. Then you’ll have to fiddle with them all the time.
My suggestion is to either get short bangs (Beware the horns) or no bangs.
My qualifications? I have fine, soft, slippery, curly hair.
Apparently the latest thing in Japan involves using wax to get anime-style hair.
*pipes up dutifully* Oh, you really should put off your CHD until after X3. You would kick yourself endlessly if you did anything to your hair before then!
Buuuut…. after that… you might consider this hairstyle (top picture below) which is a cut specifically designed for wavy medium-textured hair and is reportedly a wash & go dealie:
They call this the “romantic angled bob” and I believe it’s razor-cut as someone else recommended.
Hang in there! X3 is almost around the corner!
Hang in there, X3 is almost here!
I will, however, recommend a trim. DON’T GET YOUR HAIR CUT. But ask to get maybe 1/2″ taken off the ends and maybe even out the length a little if need be. It will do worlds of good and make your hair feel healthier.
– Me, the longhair freak
I just *did* that a few *weeks* ago. Ok, almost six weeks ago now. But it didn’t seem to help the scraggly ends at the front. I’m not actually threatening to chop it all off. I just wish I could figure out what to do with it…
I’ve always wanted to get my hair done in a zillion little braids, but I can hardly imagine going in to an Irish hairdresser and asking for that. :) Also, there is the possibility it would look very, very silly on me. :)
I can’t remember if it was me or Angie (aka Blue-Haired Angie) who coined the phrase (I think it was Angie), but it was *clearly* the disorder we shared. I’m pleased to find more people who suffer from it! :)
My hair’s not *nearly* that wavy. :) I am getting the little pincurls at the temple thing, which is weird beyond words (my hair has been stick straight my whole life), but these are by no stretch impressive waves, or even waves that generate anything like ‘fluffy’. It’s just that there’s any bend there at *all* that’s bewildering!
My hair’s nowhere near that wavy. :) But it’s a really cute cut!
How *much* wax, I wonder….
Yes… my brother and I both got hit by the mysterious hair switching at puberty. His hair had been these big, bouncy curls (in photos of him as a child, he looks like he’s wearing an Afro wig, his hair is so big) and became poker straight, with just a hint of a wave at the neckline. Mine started out mostly straight, with just a hint of a wave to keep it from lying perfectly flat, and then SPROING! curled like a poodle.
When you melted your bangs and then had almost no hair at all, it looked good on you. I quite imagine that (caveat: well done) tiny little braids would also look good on you. The difficulty of getting an Irish hairdresser to do it is another matter entirely. And finding someone who could not only commit tiny little braids all over your head, but know what sort of arrangement of tiny little braids would suit your head… that sounds as though it might be momentarily insurmountable.
Also, tiny little braids done well enough, and tight enough, to look good for any length of time (read, more than a few hours) cause some not minor damage when removed with less than 100% care.
IME.
When it is wet, just scrunch it up in your fist in sections. It should go slightly curly. :)
Melissa
I’ll have to try that sometime. Huh. :)
-Catie, not used to having waves in her hair :)
