how’d i do?

I didn’t quite get tickets to America. I did spend a lot of time trying to remember what the hell address I’d been living at when I got my Delta Airlines mileage card so I could unlock the account. I found relatively decent fares, but in order to use my voucher I must call them to make reservations, so I thought I might as well wait and make sure Ted thought the flights seemed reasonable. I also discovered it was probably easier and less stress-inducing and definitely cheaper to take a train from Penn Station than to try to fly to Saratoga Springs.

I have made an _attempt_ at WFC hotel. It’s what I said I’d do. It’ll have to, er, do. (me write pretty some day.)

Putting off bread until Monday. Will clean kitty litter in the morning.

Dropped the ball on the Octocon hotel. Oh well.

Got some writing done.

Tired now.

  1. …but on average, how much do you tend to write when you sit down to work? I know it can vary, but let’s say on a slightly-less-than-good day, how many words and/or pages (whatever you tend to measure by) do you crank out? I’m not trying to compare, it’s just something I’ve been curious about for a while. I’m a newbie myself and haven’t gotten any kind of discipline down yet. I’m having difficulty, given that I work two jobs and get no days off. >_<

  2. Not a stupid question at all, why would it be? Even on teeth-pulling days I usually aim for 1100 words. Good steady days average around 3K. Killer days I can do five or seven thousand words, and on what calls alien writing days I might do 10K. Those don’t happen very often. :)

Try for a page a day, if you want something to aim for. That’s a book in a year. :)

  3. Well, maybe not stupid…just something that you’ve probably been asked one too many times. =P

What I’m working on now started last December and has been written and rewritten several times. When I started, I was only working one job, but putting in a lot of hours (including weekends). I’d fall asleep in the chair every so often as I forced ten pages a night out. I did twenty once and thought I was going to die.

I got sick of sitting at a computer (I do it at work for a good part of the work day and goofing at home), so when I did the massive rewrite, it was by hand. The story was more fleshed out, but also more of a collection of notes.

When it came time to do the full-on, I found myself short of time and energy, working two jobs, sometimes both in one day. I’ve started going by word count. When I can focus, a few thousand words doesn’t kill me. I managed seven thousand one day, though I wasn’t feeling it. Given how much I scrap, I can only imagine how much someone who is established and does this professionally throws out.

I enjoyed Urban Shaman. I’ve been meaning to read the rest of the Walker Papers series, but haven’t managed to get around to it yet. When I’ve got the time to read something anymore, it’s stuff I bought in the past and hadn’t gotten around to, and the wife hit that “You’re not buying another until you finish yours” mode. Ah well. Hopefully you won’t be on book eight by the time I get to it. =)
