This, I think, could solve my problem of wanting to be able to customize my look & feel without having to hassle with comments going back and forth in three different places. I don’t care where the comments come *in*, as long as I can have them all emailed to me (which is the problem with the LJ RSS feed).
Now what would be really ideal would be to be able to post everything at mizkit.com/mizkit.lj, and to propagate all entries tagged ‘writing’ or ‘career’ or something to a fresh new blog at cemurphy.net…
Anybody out there in LJ-land feel like giving making that happen a shot? Your reward would be book acknowledgments, eternal gratitude, and a gold star in your crown in Heaven. And maybe fudge.
(eta: Looks like WordPress has got mood and icon plugins. Those are the two things I’d miss most about LJ, so I’m leaning that way heavily now.)
tempt me why don’t you – I could have a look over the weekend
I was sort of thinking in terms of people who already *knew* how to do WP installations and the like. I’ll give you fudge anyway. :)
well thats alright then
WordPress is amazing – and amazingly easy. While I don’t use it for blogging and tend to use it for websites (it’s that customizable!) I can tell you without a doubt that just going by the installation faq/sheet thing on the WordPress website, you should be fine.
Plugins are slightly harrier for me as I’ve never really used them, but as a general rule the WordPress Faqs are really easy to understand and follow.

Y’know, Bryant does something like that right now with his own WordPress & lj blogs. I’ll ask him to stop by here (which he usually dos anyway. ;) ).
If it works, want to do mine too? :)
I use this plugin:

It does allow you to decide which categories will be crossposted to LJ.
I absolutely love wordpress to bits.
As to the plugins, as long as they are being maintained by the writer, usually they are cake, and all you have to do is activate them.
The basic install also comes with Aksimet for spam (LOVELY!), and a test plug-in named Hello, Dolly so you can get a feel for how to deal with them.
I’d recommend the Image Manager plugin over the wordpress image handling, though it does take a tiny bit of config, and the database back-up on demand one is nice to have as well just for maintenance.
Off to find the posts to LJ plug-in now so I can actually start using LJ for something besides a screenname.
It’s not so much that I doubt my ability to manage it as I know perfectly well that if I start, I will spend a day or three or five farting around with it making everything Perfect, and I have to finish this book yesterday and in theory finish another one (entirely unwritten) by 1 Feb. So providing myself with an exciting way to procrastinate is a really bad idea. :)
I’m currently using Movable Type 4, which has a ton of plugin features (including a moods thing). I looked into WordPress but there was some more stuff in MT that I actually wanted on my end — nothing against WP, just that MT was there first with the most.
We’re doing that on Crankypenguin.com, but that’s drupal and well. :)
Oo, missed that there was mood icon plugin for WP. Need to pick that one up for the new WP installion I’m setting up.
