So I just got the print for the HEART OF STONE cover and it’s lovely, and now I must get it framed. Herein lies a problem.
Everywhere that I’ve seen in Cork that does picture framing does a very … old-school style of framing. Either plain black wood or heavily ornate gold stuff. Not much in the way of matting or color choices or anything. It is all, to my American sensibilities, quite awful.
This and this are a couple of not especially great photos of some of our artwork with the kind of framing I’m looking for. If those are absolutely useless I’ll dig some of our art out and take closer-up pictures to get across the idea, but does anybody in the Cork area, or, hell, Ireland, have any idea where I might find people who do framework like this? It’d be really absurd to have to bring my art back to America to get it framed…
(eta: Oh, here’s my tortoise framed, anyway; that’s a good picture. Except the cropping, but nevermind that.)
I can’t suggest anywhere in Cork, but I will make the observation that here in Royston, we have a good little framer that we’ve used several times. The odd thing is, it’s not an art shop, it’s a place called ‘Where friends stitch’ … yes, it’s a knitting and needlework supplies place.
I’ve nothing but praise for this place, by the way. We’ve taken pictures in, some mounted, some not, and have always discussed with the owner Pet what she thinks will work. One example was the Phoenix that did as the logo for PCon: the frame we went for was an orange stained wood that prought out the yellows and reds and oranges in the image wonderfully. Other times, we’ve gone for a tarnished metal frame, or an anodised aluminium, or plain black (OK, the easy option), or whatever. Oh, and one pair of pictures are so dark that we ended up paying extra for non-reflective glass, just so that detail wasn’t lost in the glare.
Given that Royston is only about 15,000 people, perhaps we’re just lucky, but it may be a class of shop that you hadn’t considered.
I’ll get Myles to look up our old framers and see if they are still going. They were tucked in behind the Gate cinema, ion that little street that joins Grattan St. and North Main Street. They did all sorts of framing and i have sen stuff from there in blond wood with mounts and in plain steel frames without. Not cheap though.
Aha! J and I bought that exact same Nagel. I think I wound up with it. We’ve another one, too, that I like better, but mmmmmm . . . NagelNagelNagel.
We Frame It on Dawson Street in Dublin. It’s exactly the type of thing they do. I have poster of the Wasa (old battel ship in Sweden) in a thin black frame on the wall in from of me as I type. It was done in We Frame It.
I may know a place. There is an art framimg place in Carrigaline and another in west cork who do good work (one I’ve heard, one I’ve seen the work)
Remind me when I’m not in NY and I’ll get you details if you need.
