We just got back from Pirates III a little while ago. I went in with rather lowered expectations after reading some reviews, but to my surprise and delight, I totally enjoyed it. I thought it was by far the most interesting movie for Will as a character, that the story as a whole belonged to no one particular character (it was very very complicated and mish-mashed and full), that the special effects were pretty much awesome, and that I would go see another one if they made it. It /was/ too long, but unlike P2 or, for that matter, any of the Spider-Man movies, I never found myself thinking PLEASE GOD GET ON WITH IT. Ted apparently did, but he also drank more soda than I did. I suspect a correlation. :)
If you are someone who has a child under the age of about ten, and you are thinking of bringing the kid to the movie, I would recommend seeing it first. The opening scene was, I thought, genuinely shocking, and I’m not at all sure I’d want to bring a kid to it. ‘course, I’d probably have been less disturbed by it at age ten than I am now.
Staying through the credits was, I think, worth it, even though they were very long.
And also, I don’t *care* if every good scene in Rise of the Silver Surfer is in the trailer. They’re enough to make it worth it. I *so* want to see that movie. OMG. O.O (That said, they really should not have given Jessica Alba blue contacts, because it makes her look like there’s something horribly wrong with her eyes. If they wanted a blue-eyed Susan Storm that badly they should’ve cast somebody else.)

PotC 3 was good stuff, but, as you say, way too long, and I regularly found myself losing track of who was on what side, and why. Other than that, though, it was great good fun, and we’ll certainly go see the next one.
Warner Bros are offering me free tickets to the press screening of Ocean’s 13, BTW, but I can’t go, ’cause it’s at 10.30 AM, and I’ll be in work. Boo!
I also didn’t stay through the credits….I had WAY too much to drink during the movie! I really enjoyed it – it was long, but it didn’t drag anywhere….whereas the last installment could easily have been 30 minutes shorter with no loss.

It felt too long (too many things put in) and too short (too many things left out), if you know what I mean.
Also, Chow Yun-Fat was wasted. :(

Thank you. I cannot stand her as Sue Storm. Blech. I know she got the role because the actress was hot right now, but she’s just not right for the role.
Given that I think both she and Reed are badly cast, I think they do as well as they can. It’s a shame they’re poorly cast, though, because Johnny and Ben are really quite wonderfully cast, and it would be great to see a team that genuinely felt fantastic. I actually quite like Jessica Alba. It just isn’t a good role for her.
But I don’t care, because the Surfer is going to be SO COOL!!!

…what day is the Ocean’s 13 screening, she wondered idly. I’m sure rationality wouldn’t be on the side of darting up to helpfully take those tickets off your hands, but hey, can’t hurt to wonder. :)
I’m full of fangirl squee for the Silver Surfer, and I don’t even have any emotional attachment to the FF or the Surfer. They Done Good. That chase scene is just phenomenal. The first time I saw it I was like, “Oh, Johnny, he’s going to take you too high to–oh, JOHNNY, you shoulda known better, AUGH!” and every time I see him falling I go AUGH all over again. That’s good stuff. :)
Yeah, that’s what I thought, that it didn’t drag. During the second one there were a lot of times where I found myself thinkig, “Ok, this is way too long,” and in the third, I found myself thinking, “I know this is too long, but at least I’m not *feeling* like it is.”
My wife and I just went to see the movie last night… well it ran into midnight as we left so I guess technically it was more than just last night.
I thought the movie was rather well done, you really have to wonder what most of the reviewers were thinking. I’d say that is was way too long in certain parts and a little rushed in others… I came out wishing it was a bit shorter but not absolutely dreading the fact that I spent all that time watching it. (The soda does have a direct correlation though… we went in with one of those extra-large drinks so we didn’t need a refill but that was probably a poor choice.)
One thing to say.. if a novel had that many plot twists (even though there were expected if you paid attention)… the novel would be a Robert Jordan sized tome.
I took Connor to see Spider-Man 3. He’s almost 5. He loved it. The only bit he was scared by was the “Venom looking up and hissing” bit, and that was in the trailer, and in the actual movie it didn’t bother him.
I am sure people will say I am a terrible parent. :)
Yeah, the contacts are a little weird, but COME ON there are COSMIC RAYS involved here! Maybe they’re blue because … of, uh. Y’know. Invisibility stuff.
