has *completely* ruined my productivity by introducing me to LibraryThing. I managed to rein myself in after adding only about a hundred books, and the perfectionist in me is not at all happy with half of them, because they’ve got things like bad capitalization (Storm Front, for example, is in as Storm front) and a bunch of them are paperback editions where I have hardback, and I can’t remember what cover I’ve got for a lot of the older stuff, and I can’t make it give me the right cover for, say, ‘s older editions of the Secret Country books, and…
*Doom*. This is *doom*. should be ashamed of himself.
Worse, all the shiny new covers for re-releases make me want to go out and buy new editions of the books! Do other people have this problem? And I can’t remember lots of what we got rid of and what we kept when we moved, and augh! It’s just awful! And now if I *don’t* have these books I have to get them again! And…and…augh!
I am going back to work now. LibraryThing’s evil seductive ways will no longer tempt me. I have a chapter to finish, gorrammit.
(One chapter today. Two every day for the rest of the week. I Will Prevail.)

Ooh. that looks like a truly evil thing for cataloging books.
Sadly, I still haven’t cataloged mine.. but it would take years. At least they are organized in the house. All the years as a Technical Service Librarian makes me want to have it all neatly organized. But the numbers of books on my shelf make that not very feasible.
Hmph. When I showed you the mizkit entries at LibraryThing weeks ago you only said it looked very weird! I guess I just don’t have the seductive powers of slovobooks…
*peer* I honestly have no recollection of that. Or, more accurately, I have a very vague recollection and the vague recollection tells me I utterly failed to grasp what the function of LibraryThing was. I apologize profusely and now see your wisdom for the shining beacon that it truly was!
One of the things I do with my LT entries is go in and correct all the punctuation and capitalisation, and of course search for hours for the right cover illustration. I do the books a bit at a time, while having them on the desk in front of me. It’s not that I’m obsessional about it, or anything.
well actually it is, of course…
Oh, believe me, I see many hours of doing that very thing ahead of me.
My husband, however, says I may not get a paid LT account until I’ve finished writing PHOENIX.
Given that I am up to 178 books listed on it at this very moment, that’s probably a good call. :) (And, hell, I’m doing most of that from memory. It helps, of course, to know you own everything Cynthia Voigt wrote before 1998…)
Chris has gotten sucked in to LibraryThing as well. She spent her free time for a couple of weeks entering in her books.
I haven’t entered in mine, yet…
We’re ALL doomed, I said happily! :)
Augh! And I have to make certain I have the right edition! And I can only click on one entry per search so when I bring up the whole slew of Ellison books that I have, I need to repeat the search over and over!
Curse you!
*tries very, very hard to look guilty*
Is this a bad time to mention the Library Thing syndicated feed on LJ,?
yes, probably. :)
Oh dear. And they have sound recordings indexed as well.
Kit,
Chris here, Harold’s wife. My LJ profile is pretty outdated as you can see… You’re the first person besides myself in my extended circle to join LibraryThing (so far as I know), so I’d be curious to see what our commonly held books are (if any). My handle there is AmphipodGirl; what’s yours, if you’re willing to share?
Voight… that means you may have _Glass Mountain_, possibly my favorite non-genre novel ever. I love the daily answering machine messages, the catalog of one dinner’s leftovers turning into the next’s grand centerpiece, the detached young, modern butler’s viewpoint and then how involved he becomes in his employer’s life. It’s dry, ironic, charming. Fabulous book.
I’m cemurphy. Hi, Chris! It’s nice to meet you! *beam*
Sadly, I *don’t* have that one. It’s one of about six I saw on Amazon when I went to check all her titles (because I had to read summaries of some to be sure I had them) that I’ve never even heard of. I haven’t got the ORFE sequel, either, and…well, about four more. I’ll have to get copies, ’cause I love her writing.
o.O That site may soon OWN me.
*wonders how long it would take to enter in 1800 books..*
On the other hand, my wee little excel spreadsheet is doing quite well..
I am, unsurprisingly, Aberdeen.
And I’m only allowed to add one shelf per sitting until I’m done with other things. Then, someday, I’ll re-organize the physical books to where they should be.
