augh.

So the comments spam on my cemurphy.net galleries have gotten utterly out of control (mostly because I tend to forget about them). I don’t *really* want to delete all comments, because there are a handful of useful ones identifying people and things (and I’m not sure it can be done anyway), but I also haven’t got the time to slog through literally thousands of comments and delete most of them. I can’t figure out how to make the Gallery blacklist thing work, which would obviously help, but, well. Not smart enough, or not dedicated enough, more like.

Anybody (where ‘anybody’ can be one person or several) want to deal with this for me? I will provide signed editions of books, name a character after you, buy you a beer, whatever, and also love you forever!

(By the way, whitewashing this here fence is real fun!)

O.O

ETA: I think I have enough of a Team Whack-A-Mole to take care of the problem now. Thanks! :)

  1. I’d be happy to take a whack at the moles for you – it would take a while, but I could chip away at them in the evenings.

  2. Hiya,

Looking at the gallery, it looks like you are using gallery v1 – in which case this link might be of value to you (although I don’t know how technical you want to get – I can help out there if you need):

Also, it looks as if the latest safe version (1.5.7) has spam control tools – which means that it might be worth doing an upgrade.

    Btw – love the pictures!

  3. Actually, that’s sort of weird, as it was literally just upgraded to 1.5.7 this morning. Which will hopefully make a difference in the future, but it’s not all that helpful (unless your link there is, I haven’t looked at it yet) for getting rid of spam that’s there. :)

*looks at your link* Way beyond what I’m willing to/capable of doing. :)

  4. Heh, I totally understand :)

So, it looks like you have a few options:

    1. The upgrade. It does have spam control tools – but I don’t know if that includes what is currently there. If it did, your problem is solved (doubt it does).

    2. The sql database clean-up. It would only take a short while to fix everything. The biggest issue is that its getting into the guts of the database – which means you will need someone technical, and you will need to give them access to the database – which means you should also trust them as well as you will have to give them passwords, etc. (Also, standard precautions will need to be taken – including backing up the data already present in case of accident, etc (I am fairly confident that the code in that link will work, but it always pays to back up data before doing anything))

    3. Grunt work. Give someone/give a handful of people admin access to the gallery, and let them go in and remove the spam comments individually. Its a safe and slow approach, with the side-effect of making people bleed from the eyes when they are into their third hour.

I hope you get it cleaned up okay. Let me know if you need any help with it, or if you want any more info, etc.

    C.

  5. will delete comments for allergy medicine.

SEriously. nothing better to do since i can’t go to work (well, I suppose i could write, but where’s the fun in that?)

  6. be careful.. we don’t want a superhero trilogy to derail her carefully planned deadlines. :)

  7. Ah, she can just slip the name “Team Whack-A-Mole” somewhere into Chance. *grin*

  8. I emailed your lj address as I’m not sure what else to use, but if you didn’t get an email from me, let me know! :)

  9. I know absolutely nothing about live journals and such so I can not help with your spam problem. But I love me a game of Whak-A-Mole so count me in!! :) HEEHEE
