    VERY BIG Walker Papers news!

So I have VERY BIG NEWS! News which you might have already heard if you follow me other places, but VERY BIG none-the-less!

I have gotten the rights to the Walker Papers back!!!

Now, I’ve learned that this is a degree of Writer Speak, so let me translate: I never *lost* the rights, per se. When a publisher buys your book to publish, they *acquire* the rights, which then can, after a certain period of time, revert to the author. It doesn’t happen automatically: the author has to ask, and there are generally a bunch of hoops the publisher can jump through to avoid returning the rights. In this case, though, they didn’t jump through the hoops, and just reverted the rights to me. I was VERY MUCH not expecting this, as I spent about fourteen years (not joking) trying to get the rights back to one of my series, and another is dragging through what I hope will be the only round of hoop-jumping.

But what it MEANS is that they’re fully mine to do with as I wish. What I wish is to republish them independently, and I’m pursuing doing that even as we speak!

I’ve just chosen a new cover model for a photo shoot to rebrand the whole series covers under, which is VERY exciting! I’m working with a couple of audio book companies to decide how we’ll be going forward with them available as audio books, and where. I intend to make print editions available, too, and all of this should get rolling really visibly sometime this summer!

    I’M SO EXCITED!!! :D :D :D

P.S. a lot of people have asked, so let me clarify: this does not mean there will be new Walker Papers novels. Joanne’s story arc is done. It’s faintly possible that at some point there will be more books set in that world, but…not right now, folks. Sorry. :)

Slaying the Dragon: A Walker Papers short story

Once in a while I manage to have my act together enough to present a holiday short story to my readers. This year’s story was inspired by visiting North Carolina for the first time, and driving some of those twisty twisty roads that Joanne is so fond of.

Slaying the Dragon is set five years after the end of SHAMAN RISES, and as such, contains, if not outright spoilers, certainly spoilers by association. :)

a Walker Papers 2016 election prediction

I *do* have a throw-away comment about the 2016 election in one of my #WalkerPapers short stories. I thought I did.

The protagonist is Ashley, the little girl from #ThunderbirdFalls, 20 years later:

    “I had a grenade launcher.
I wasn’t supposed to, of course. Nobody was, especially since the country-wide crackdown after the election riots when I was seventeen.”

The story was written in 2012 and was a deliberate (given the Walker Papers timeline) reference to the 2016 elections, and I kept the line even though it made my editor say it seemed like the future of Jo’s world had gotten very dark.

Yeah, well. Jo’s world got the magic back, and we got the Minority Vote President, so I’m not sure hers is as dark as ours.

Anyway, here, have a read: Twenty Years After: A Walker Papers short story. ♥

    2016 work schedule

Want to know what I’m doing this year? Or at least, what I’m trying to do? Here. Let me tell you!

    Publishing MAGIC & MANNERS
I’m in the very last stages of getting MAGIC & MANNERS out into the world–the last bits (the ISBN bar code, mostly) are being generated for the cover, it’ll be handed off to a professional to convert it into e-books, and it’s the first book I’ll be publishing through the Ingram self publishing system, which will theoretically make it order-able in bookstores all around the country/world. Official pub date is February 16, 2016, and the audio book will be out right around then too! And I can’t STAND not showing off the cover, so this post is also a Cover Reveal!
    Magic & Manners cover reveal!

(SQUEE!!!! Cover art by the magnificent Tara O’Shea at Fringe Element!)

    Finishing REDEEMER
That means finishing the draft, revising it to get fix all the NOTE:s left in it (which include things like description, slang, word repetition, just all sorts of things), then sending it to my editor, who will tell me everything that’s wrong with it. Then I’ll fix it, send it back to her, give it to my parents to beta-read, get line edits/polishing details, do THOSE, send the manuscript to the copy editor, do THOSE, get the book laid out and e-files made for it, get the cover art finished, get ISBNs, get it out to the Kickstarter backers, perhaps see about submitting it for proper reviews, and finally get it out into the reading public’s hands.

    Revising BEWITCHING BENEDICT
which involves everything listed above from “fix it, send it back to her” and goes on pretty well through the end of that paragraph. Perhaps not review copies for that. Maybe not even print copies right away, IDK.

    Revising IMMORTAL BELOVED
closer to REDEEMER than BENEDICT, except it needs to go through two pre-editorial revision passes, for Reasons. With luck, the revision process on both of these books will be something I can do while REDEEMER is with Matrice.

    Writing SKYMASTER
which is the last of the YA quadrology I’m writing for my nephew, and which may turn out to be a Kickstarter project, which entails everything under the ‘Redeemer’ header except for for FOUR BOOKS AT ONCE.

    Writing KISS OF ANGELS
the Grace O’Malley novella, & another 8 or so Old Races short stories (get them HERE first!), and overseeing production on one, possibly two (depending on how the short story project goes) Old Races short story collections.

    Writing
the 2nd Walker Papers/Skinwalker crossover novella with Faith Hunter

    Revising
    the epic fantasy proposal

    Writing
    the climate change series proposal.

    Writing
if I have _time_ after all that a sequel to either REDEEMER or MAGIC & MANNERS or BEWITCHING BENEDICT ahahahahahaha

    Joanne’s Story

So the postman knocks on the door and I’m all “postman, huh, weird, I wonder what he’s delivering, I’m not expecting anything,” and he hands me this thing that says “art” on the customs slip and I’m all like “art? art? i don’t think i ordered any art? what–oh, from Eleri? Oh, she must have seen something that made her think of me, how sweet of her,” all this while I’m opening the package, and I open it so I’m looking at the back and it says “Joanne’s Story” and I’m thinking “huh interesting” and I’m thinking “this board probably opens up, it’s probably a protector for whatever art is in it,” so I was looking for an open end and kind of turning it around and then I realized NO WAIT THIS *IS* THE ART and then

    oh my god

posted behind the cut because it’s very slightly NSFW in a petroglyphic way, which hasn’t stopped me from posting it all over twitter and facebook, mind you :)
