Tommy Murphy’s Exciting Trip To The Store

Mom just related this story of Dad’s Exciting Trip To The Store.

Dad went to buy some milk and a treat for Mom and happened upon a young woman, two early teen boys, and a bike at the edge of the road. Thinking someone might have fallen or been hit, he asked what was happening. It turned out the young woman, who was Polish, had fallen and the boys stopped to help her.

…she’s been in Ireland a year, and has been married for less than that to a black man. She’s pregnant, and he doesn’t know it yet, but today she found out he’s seeing someone else.

She has a job (working 20 hours a week and making 8 euro an hour) and he doesn’t and when they got married she put his name on her account and now he controls all the money and only gives her a little bit. She fell because she’s very tired because she had to work late and her husband told her she could walk home. Evidently he normally he comes and gets her, so she had no money to take a bus or anything.

Her mother in Poland thinks she shouldn’t have gotten married, most especially to a black man, and thinks she should give the child up for adoption because the child would not be accepted in Poland, and told her to contact the Polish Embassy for help. And the young woman said she hasn’t been here long enough to know the ins and outs of the Irish welfare system and if she was in Poland she’d know what she could do. And she cried a lot, and Dad offered her some money and called a taxi for her, but she didn’t want to take his money.

So Dad told her the story of when he was broke and the guy gave him $20 and told him to pass it on to someone who needed it someday. He was trying to give her 30 euro and she said she’d only take 20 because that was the story. Dad told her, no, she could take the 30 and pass 30 on when someone needed it. So she took the money.

And she told Daddy she’s going to get the man’s name off her account so he can’t spend her money anymore and she wants to save enough to go home to Poland, and that she would go to the Embassy.

So he had a very interesting trip to the store. O.O
