perspective

XKCD is usually terrific anyway, but this one is particularly awesome. Depths of the world’s lakes, seas, oil wells…. Also the mouseover text on the embedded comic is unusually heartbreaking, though you sort of have to start by reading the first one I linked to so you can see what the mouseover is talking about. I had Hunger Games dreams all last night. Apparently one should not binge on that trilogy and then go straight to bed. Or I shouldn’t, anyway. My brain has become more susceptible to immediate regurtitations…

The Hunger Games

Have burned through the trilogy in the past 2 days. Thought CATCHING FIRE was by far the strongest, but thought MOCKINGJAY ended the whole story appropriately. Heartstabbily, but appropriately. If I get my…self…together I’ll write a more through commentary in the next few days, but my goodness, it’s been a long time since I’ve read 3 books in 2 days. (How sad is that?) The remainder of the week will be spent focusing hard on NO DOMINION revisions. (Honest, that’s why I read two books today. I was going to…

EasterCon

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I won’t be going to EasterCon this weekend after all. Somehow I vaguely feel this means I should, I don’t know, write a book this weekend instead. Or at least revise one. That’s normal, right? However, perhaps heading off that urge, I bought the Hunger Games trilogy and a bunch of Dick Francis novels I haven’t read yet. And I’m reading Michelle Sagara’s CAST IN CHAOS, which may be my favorite of the Cast books so far, which is saying a lot, since I…

Recent Reads: THE ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU

I’m afraid that, like with FRANKENSTEIN, my reaction to THE ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU is “Thank God I’ve read that now, because now I never have to read it again.” The two books have more in common than I expected, which is silly, since I know what they’re both about. MOREAU is much more bearable as a read, because the protagonist isn’t nearly as sniveling as Frankenstein is, but the descriptions of pain and vivisection did not make me all that happy. One aspect I did enjoy about both books…

Recommended Reads: The Crossroads Trilogy

(This post was written over the course of a few weeks.) I read Kate Elliott’s SPIRIT GATE a few years ago when it first came out, and have had the sequels sitting on my shelf for over a year, unread because (as I may have mentioned previously) being a full-time writer (and Mommy!) really cuts into your reading time. So I wanted to re-read SPIRIT GATE before tackling the other two, ’cause I barely remembered what had happened in it. I liked it even better the second time through, which…
